Both parties must withdraw for any talks: Sushma Swaraj at Rajya Sabha

Sushma Swaraj swayed the Rajya Sabha on Thursday as she sternly warned China saying India is well equipped to defend itself.

This came on a day that the Chinese foreign ministry said diplomatic channels between the two countries were open but repeated its demand that India withdraws its troops from the Dokalam plateau as a “precondition” for any meaningful dialogue between the Asian giants to resolve the month-old face-off.

Adding to the immaculate timing was EU Parliament’s vice-president recently questioned China’s encroachment policy in Dokalam and South China Sea region. "Over the years, China has been trying to get closer and closer to where the tri-junction point ends. It has done things like repair roads, retard them…This time though, they came with bulldozers and construction equipment with the aim of breaching the point where the tri-junction ends. That is a threat to our security," Swaraj pointed out.

“This time though, they came with bulldozers and construction equipment with the aim of breaching the point where the tri-junction ends. That is a threat to our security," said Swaraj.

"We had to intervene at the tri-junction point to stop China's unilateral attempt to change status quo because this would impact our security. We are willing to talk but both sides should take back their armies to the original position," the foreign minister said.

"The global community is supportive of India's stance," Swaraj added.

India and China have a dispute over their boundaries dating back to the 1962 war and are in talks to resolve their differences.

Doka La is the Indian name for the region which Bhutan recognizes it as Dokalam, while China claims it as part of its Donglang region.
