NDA announced the name of 68-year-old, experienced party man for the candidature of Vice President on July 17th.
"All the members of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) have welcomed Venkaiah Naidu's candidature for Vice President," Shah said in a press conference after the parliamentary board meeting. The candidature was also endorsed by PM Modi as he took to twitter and said, “I know M Venkaiah Naidu Garu for years. Have always admired his hard work and tenacity. A fitting candidate for the office of Vice-President.”
Reports say that while the veteran has already resigned from his posts of Parliamentary Affairs, Information and Broadcasting and Urban Development, he did have initial reservations against accepting a non-political post. “At that time Amit Bhai told him that while he understood the reservations, he should not say this in front of the Prime Minister,” said a senior minister.
Given that the NDA is short of numbers in the Upper House and the opposition has not allowed any regime change since 2014, any, Mr. Naidu is expected to deftly handle the precarious position as the government seeks to clear push though more of its legislative agenda in the next two years.
Mr .Naidu will file his nomination on Tuesday at 11 am.
