A mistaken medical diagnosis led a Portuguese man to spend 43 years in a wheelchair, who finally re-learning to walk in his fifties.

Lisbon hospital diagnosed the man Rufino Borrego at the age of 13 with the incurable muscular dystrophy. After that he used a wheelchair to get around for more than four decades till a neurologist in 2010 understand that he in fact suffered from a different disease named as myasthenia that weakens the muscles.

The patient with the rare disease can be treated by taking asthma medication. Borrego was able to walk for the first time, after his new diagnosis.

61 year old Borrego now lives a normal life and required only two physiotherapy sessions a year.
