The government, facing severe criticism about the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST), announced several steps Friday to remove the concerns of businessmen, exporters and small businessmen. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley gave gifts to common man and small businessmen before Diwali after the 22nd meeting of GST Council.
Food items
Roti, Khakhra, Unbranded snacks and dry mango have been removed from the scope of 12 percent tax slabs. Now they will be charged 5 percent tax. Child packaged food and stationery goods, as well as the needs of children, will now be less taxed. So far these 12 percent tax was being levied, which has been reduced to 5 percent.
Clothes will be cheaper
Articles of clothing will be cheaper in the coming days. GST has been reduced from 18% to 12% on the man-made yarn used to make cloth. The synthetic filament yarn has also been reduced to such a tax. For women, GST has been reduced from 5 to 5 percent for Zari's work and Artificial Jewelry.
Medicines will be affordable,
Ayurvedic and Homeopathic medicines will be affordable. Instead of 12 percent, it has been decided to recover 5 percent tax.
Freedom from tax filing for small cars every month
GST Council has given great relief in the matter of filing tax returns and filing returns to small and medium enterprises. Companies doing business up to Rs 1.5 crore per annum will now have to complete quarterly returns instead of every month.
Increasing the scope of composition
GST Council also increased the limit of business from Rs 75 lakh to Rs 1 crore for the companies that have composition scheme. Under this scheme, SMEs do not have to go through strict formalities and they have been given the facility of tax payment in the range of 1 to 5 percent.
Tax on e-waste, plastic and rubber waste has also been reduced to 5% on garbage.
