Pakistan won't accept to import tomatoes from India even though prices of tomatoes have shot up to Rs 300 per kg in Pakistan, it will not import the vegetable from India, Minister for Food Security Sikandar Hayat Bosan said.
Pakistan is currently facing a shortage of tomatoes in the domestic market which is the main reason of soar in the price. While imports from India fill the gap each year, the move to bar containers from entering the country from across the border have created a huge demand and supply gap.
Local vendors are currently waiting for Sindh’s produce to reach the market, the report said. Bosan has assured that the tomato and onion crisis will be over within a few days after their crops ripen in Balochistan. According to media reports, the government had also fixed the price for tomatoes between Rs 132-140 per kg.
The Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) has hailed Bosan’s decision and said this move would help local farmers and save foreign exchange for Pakistan. Terming it a right decision, LCCI President Abdul Basit said, “Therefore, local growers should be facilitated to the maximum and their issues should be resolved on a priority basis. The government needs to increase the cropped area to avoid any crisis-like situation.”
The Indo-Pak ties have soured after the Pathankot terror attack on Indian Air Force Base in Pathankot in January 2016 and the Uri incident in September in the same year.
