The smallest country in the world dates back to the Second World War when fortress islands were built by the British to defend themselves from German invaders. Some of these were actually illegally built in international waters. So in early 1960s, Roy Bates, British army Major, set up a radio station on an abandoned naval fort named, Knock John. This led to a legal battle with the UK Government, and hence he set his sight upon Rough Towers, which was further off shore, and outside the 3 mile territorial waters rule.
