Whether you’re traveling within Australia or overseas, on your own or with friends, leaving the routine of home can be an exciting and sometimes overwhelming experience. It is a dream destination with so much to offer but unfortunately for backpackers and budget travelers Australia one of the most expensive places in the world.
Here are many ways that you can still enjoy traveling in Australia, even on a shoestring budget:-
1. Travel for free - A number of Australian cities have made select public transportation routes free to the public. For example, Brisbane has free service on several bus routes in the city center, while Perth offers free transit on buses and trains within a certain city zone.
2. Have an understanding of the culture - As the culture of other countries can differ quite substantially from what you’re used to at home.
3. Learn some basics of the local language - Whilst most countries you are likely to visit will have English speakers, learning the basics of the local language is a great backup plan. It’s also really fun to do and is the good exercise for your brain.
4. Share a Ride - You can often find someone heading the same way to share a ride with on hostel notice boards or Gumtree or check out new ride sharing websites and apps. Some travelers choose to hitchhike and safely do so all around Australia, but you should carefully assess the risks and safety implications of doing this.
5. The Internet is expensive so prepare to stay offline - While most places in Australia provide you with internet connectivity, it’s not the best. If you plan to take a local connection, be careful of the prices as it can be quite expensive.
6. Consider touring on a cruise - If you are someone who doesn’t like to unpack more than once while traveling, take an Australian cruise to tour. While this might seem like a bad idea, especially for a traveler on a budget, some cruises in Australia are actually quite cheap.
