Caffeine, usually in the form of coffee, tea, caffeinated sodas and energy drinks, is often consumed to increase cognitive functioning and improve a bad mood. Caffeine has its perks, but it can pose problems too. Find out how much is too much.

1. Consuming more than 300 milligrams of caffeine per day may give you the "caffeine jitters," which is that jumpy and slightly alarmed feeling.

2. Larger amounts of caffeine may make you irritable, sleepless, and may even trigger anxiety and cause diarrhea.

3. Caffeine withdrawal can give you headaches, make you crabby, give you muscle aches and generally make you feel miserable for a few days.

4. Drinking unfiltered coffee can increase total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL), and levels of another type of blood fat called triglycerides. This might increase the risk of developing heart disease

5. There is some concern that coffee might make bleeding disorders worse.

6. Drinking caffeinated coffee increases the pressure inside the eye. The increase starts within 30 minutes and lasts for at least 90 minutes.
