The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) is finalizing plans to set free WiFi deployment across the country by permitting individuals, communities and small-time entrepreneurs to offer feasible and high-speed internet to the public and improve India’s poor broadband connectivity levels.

The plan is to provide the internet for 2 paise per MB against the existing rates of around 10 paise. Trai feels that inter-operability of internet access will be a key to success of the plan. The regulator is looking at the formation of policies and creation of an infrastructure for the same.

According to the sources, "The recommendations will be sent to the telecom ministry very soon for necessary changes in the licensing and other rules."

The aim is to enable the consumer to move easily from his mobile network to public Wifi hotspots without facing several issues of authentication.
