Angkor Wat, is not only the largest Hindu temple but also the largest religious monument made in the History till now, in Cambodia. Its a temple complex in which is spread across an area of 1,626, 000 m2 . Firstly, it was a Hindu temple built by a Khmer Empire ruler named Suryavarman for the Hindu deity Lord Vishnu but then it was transformed to Buddhist temple by the end of 12th century.
The meaning of Angkor wat means "City of Temples" , also in Sanskrit it means Devo ki nagari. The original name of the temple was Vrah Viṣṇuloka (Sanskrit) or Brah Bisnulōk (Local variant) which means the sacred dwelling of Vishnu.
According to religious beliefs, the construction of Angkor Wat was ordered by Indra to act as a palace for his son Precha Ket Mealea. According to the 13th century Chinese traveler Daguan Zhou, it was believed by some that the temple was constructed in a single night by a divine architect.
According to French explorer Henry Mohut, "One of these temples—a rival to that of Solomon, and erected by some ancient Michelangelo—might take an honorable place beside our most beautiful buildings. It is grander than anything left to us by Greece or Rome, and presents a sad contrast to the state of barbarism in which the nation is now plunged."
Since 1990's Angkor wat has been the vital destination for all the visitors. As per Cambodian Goverment 561,000 visitors had seen the temple in the year 1993, which further increased to a million in the year 2007, over two million by 2012. The place has been rented from Government by a private group called SOKIMEX. Also due to increase in touristers UNESCO has decided to safeguard the cultural heritage.
