In its continuous efforts to vanish geographical and cultural bounds Google’s next big step is NOTO. NOTO is a massive open source font family that allows people all over the world to create and share information in their own language.

The term NOTO comes from the phrase “No more Tofu”. Tofu is a blank rectangular box that appears on your mobile or computer when it can’t display a particular font. In coder language Tofu is termed as .notdef or “not defined”.

Bob Jung, the head of Google’s Internationalization department stated that Google’s products work everywhere and his team spent six years to ensure absolute no Tofu from Google’s devices.

With the involvement of typography and font design experts from Monotype and Adobe, Google has succeeded to create a font family that spans more than 800 languages and 110,000 characters. Some languages like English, Hindi, Mandarin Chinese, or Russian are supported by Unicode and rarely show Tofu but there are hundreds of languages and NOTO solves the big usability issue for many people.

NOTO is open source and anyone can download the design source file from the Github repository. Company says there is lot more to come and they will keep NOTO up to date.
