It was your first love
Nothing hurts as much as losing your first love. The reason it hurts so much is that you’ve never experienced the feeling of being in love before. Once our hearts have been broken and stuck back together again a few times, you realise you will survive. But even if you’ve had many relationships since that first break up, it remains in a category all of its own.
You’ve idealised what you had
It’s most unfair but if you did have good times with an ex, it’s likely all the memories of the two of you are good ones. We idealise past relationships because our brains are programmed to throw up pleasant memories rather than painful ones. Our memory of a past relationship is rarely a true recall of what your real life relationship was actually like.
You have the same friends
You have a right to spend time with your friends without your ex present, and you also have a right to decline invitations to events that your ex is also attending. Even if you are okay running into the ex from time to time, this doesn’t mean you need to be friends. It may be hard to see your ex as just another acquaintance when you have so much history together, but over time that history won’t be in the foreground anymore.
