Scabies is one of the common skin infection in India. It is very infectious and effects children between the age groups of 1 to 5 years.
Symptoms
Scabies are small, dry lesions that appear in the web of the the fingers, armpits, buttocks, and inside of the thighs. They cause a lot of itchiness which increases during the night. Gradually, these lesions become very infected due to the scratching and join together and are filled with pus.
Causes
Scabies is caused by a tiny insect and it spreads very fast. Hence, care should be taken so that others do not get infected. If one person is infected in the family it could spread to other family members as well. If the whole family is infected by scabies, then all the family members have to be treated at the same time.
Treatment
The Doctor would usually prescribe Benzyl Benzoate, a solution that has to be applied over the whole body except the face. It is usually advised to reapply this solution for three consecutive days while on the fourth day it should be washed off.
Prevention
Maintaining proper hygiene is very important to prevent scabies. Also care should be taken to wash the clothes properly of the infected person, so that others do not get infected.
