Dengue is one of the most common mosquito-borne diseases in India. Many kids with dengue fever don't have symptoms; others have mild symptoms that appear anywhere from 4 days to 2 weeks after being bitten by an infected mosquito. Symptoms typically last for 2 to 7 days. Once kids have had the illness, they become immune to that particular type of virus.

Symtoms of dengue in toddlers

  • High fever
  • Cough
  • Mild skin rash
  • Severe headache
  • Severe eye pain
  • Joint pain
  • Muscle or bone pain
  • Rash
  • Mild bleeding manifestation
  • Low white cell count

Symptoms are generally mild in younger children and those who are infected with the disease for the first time. Older kids, adults, and those who have had a previous infection may have moderate to severe symptoms.

Preventing dengue in toddlers

There is no vaccine to prevent dengue fever, so if children live in or will be visiting areas where dengue fever is likely, the only way to protect them from the disease is to minimize their chances of being bitten by an infected Aedes mosquito.

  • Dress your child in long-sleeved clothing and trousers to reduce exposed skin.
  • Make your child wear light-coloured clothes, as dark colour attracts mosquittos.
  • Use an age-appropriate mosquito repellent
  • Use mosquito nets while sleeping
  • If you do not already have them, install mosquito meshes on windows

Untreated dengue can develop into dengue haemorrhagic fever (DHF) which can cause bleeding, liver failure, convulsions and even death. Also, dengue haemorrhagic fever (DHF) usually develops in people who have already had dengue. So, prevention is very important.
