Nutrition simply said, "the science of food". It is the simple process of getting the nutrients from food and how the body uses the nutrients.
Nutrition is the process of ingestion, digestion, absorption, metabolism, transport and storage and finally, excretion of waste.
The food we intake contains nutrients as well as non-nutrients. The nutrients required by the body should be in specific amounts; too little or too much is bad, it should be the right amount to maintain good health.
Nutrition comprises of carbohydrates, fats, proteins and water which are required in large amounts. Therefore, these are called macronutrients. Vitamins and minerals are needed in smaller amounts and hence are called micronutrients.
Role of nutrients
Proteins are required for the growth and repair of tissues.
Carbohydrates and fats gives the body energy.
Vitamins, minerals and water are needed for the protection of the body.
Malnutrition
Malnutrition is the excess or imbalance of nutrients. It refers to both undernutrition and overnutrition. Undernutrition is the lack of nutrients and overnutrition is the excess f nutrients.
