Recreativo de Libolo: A tragedy without precedent in the history of Angolan football

A stampede at a football stadium in Angola killed 17 football fans and supporters. The tragedy took place on Friday i.e, February 10, a source from police informed.

In the ongoing Angola’s homely league season, rush and rout spread throughout between Santa Rita de Cassia and Recreativo de Libolo.

“There was a blockage at the entrance to the stadium... this obstruction caused multiple fatalities -- 17 deaths, and there are 56 injured in the hospital,” Orlando Bernardo, a police spokesman said.

“While the players were on the field, outside fans were trying to get into the stadium and a gate probably gave way to the pressure of the crowd causing several people to fall who were literally trampled on by the crowd,” Recreativo de Libolo marked in a statement.

He further said, “There are already 17 confirmed dead and at least 59 wounded... a tragedy without precedent in the history of Angolan football.”
