AAP announces candidate for mayoral election

NEW DELHI: The Aam Aadmi Party on Friday announced Shelly Oberoi, who had succeeded from ward number 86 (East Patel Nagar) of MCD, as the party’s candidate for the mayoral election in the Delhi Municipal Corporation  (MCD).

On January 6, 2019, when the MCD meets for the first time, elections will be held to elect the next mayor and deputy mayor of Delhi. The oath will also be given to the 250 newly elected council members during this meeting.

This will also be the civic body's first meeting since the three former municipalities viz. North, South, and East,  merged into a single MCD in May.

The Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Delhi are elected each year. The first and third years of the municipality's five-year term for the office of mayor are allocated for women and members of Scheduled Castes (SC), respectively, while the remaining years are unreserved. The deadline for submitting nominations for mayoral elections is December 27.

The AAP won 134 of the 250 seats in the MCD elections, which were held on December 4, ending the BJP's 15-year reign in the city's three former civic bodies (now unified).
