All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) chief advisor Samujjal Bhattacharyaon Sunday demanded that the Central Government institute a national award in the cultural sphere in the name of first Assam cultural Icon Rupkonwar Jyotiprasad Agarwala. Addressing a huge gathering on the occasion of the 70th death anniversary of Jyoti Prasad Agarwala observed in the state as Silpi Divas, Bhattacharya said there is an award instituted in the name of Dadasaheb Phalke,but Jyoti Prasad Agarwala, who made ‘Joymati hads been ignored by the Indian film milieu. He said, “We demand that a national award be instituted in his name and that the state government initiate the move. This would be a befitting tribute to the doyen of Assamese culture." Agarwala was a playwright, writer, songwriter and filmmaker. He was considered as Assamese cultural icon, deeply revered for his creative vision and output and is popularly called the Rupkonwar of Assamese culture. He is regarded as the founder of Assamese cinema for Joymoti (1935).[5] His death anniversary (17 January) is observed as Silpi divas (Artists' Day) in his honour.
