Nobel laureates Abhijeet Banerjee and Esther Dufflow said on the occasion of their achievement, 'We don't have to deal with problems like collecting clean water or raising fuel daily. Talking about Abhijeet Banerjee's background, he joined the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1999, a decade after completing his PhD from Harvard. Here, Esther Dufflow completed her PhD, and after spending many years together, the two got married.
First wife Arundhati is also an economist. Dr. Arundhati Tuli Banerjee was also a lecturer at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The two also studied together in Kolkata. However, they later divorced. They both have a child. The two also made a documentary film, The Name of the Disease, in 2006, which described India's health problems. The two also worked at Columbia University for some time together.
Abhijeet married for the second time and both of them worked together for a long time at MIT. Abhijeet and Duffalo have been in live in relationship for 18 months and in 2012 they had their first child. The two legally married in the year 2015. In his war against poverty, Bhattacharya set up Abdul Latif Jamil Poverty Action Lab in the year 2003. Dufflow is also a professor of poverty alleviation and developmental economics at MIT. Abhijeet wrote in his book Poor Economics: Rethinking Poverty and the Ways to End It that poverty reduction schemes do not succeed because they do not center the economic incentives of the poor.
Abhijeet's entire family is involved in economics. Abhijeet's mother and father have also been economists. His mother Nirmala Banerjee has been a professor of economics at the Center for Studies in Social Sciences, Kolkata. While father Deepak Banerjee has been the Chairman and Professor of the Department of Economics at Presidency College, Kolkata.
