New Delhi: Adani Green Energy Limited (AGEL) has taken a pioneering step towards sustainable green energy generation by focusing on significantly reducing the water footprint within its expansive solar portfolio through the introduction of cutting-edge technologies. In a bid to make the generation of renewable energy more sustainable, AGEL is rolling out a water-free robotic cleaning system aimed at drastically lowering water consumption for the maintenance of its solar modules. The company plans to implement this innovative approach across its operational solar and hybrid sites, especially targeting regions like Rajasthan and Kutch in Gujarat, known for their arid and water-scarce environments. By adopting this technology, AGEL aims to reduce water usage for solar module maintenance to zero. Presently, the state-of-the-art robotic cleaning technology has been integrated into 30% of AGEL's operational solar and hybrid plants, which amounts to 2,070 megawatts out of 7,043 megawatts (including the solar component of hybrid plants). This adoption is projected to save a staggering 283 million liters of water annually, equivalent to the yearly water requirement of approximately 2.7 million households. AGEL is on the verge of finalizing an agreement worth 0.80 million USD with an Israeli firm for the supply and installation of these advanced robotic systems. The initial order will cater to a 150-megawatt under-construction site in Phalodi, near Jodhpur. Concurrently, installation work has already commenced at the hybrid plant in Jaisalmer. However, the company refrained from commenting on specific details regarding the deal. Having already employed robots to combat dust accumulation on solar panels and modules in the past, AGEL's new robotic technology uses a water-free approach that not only contributes to environmental conservation but also enhances the energy output of solar panels. Addressing the pressing concerns surrounding freshwater scarcity, AGEL has been actively involved in various water stewardship activities, aligning with the UN's Sustainable Development Goal 6 on the sustainable management of water resources. During the recent H1 FY24 earnings announcement, Amit Singh, CEO of Adani Green Energy, affirmed the company's commitment to surpassing 45 gigawatts of capacity by 2030 in line with India's decarbonization goals. Singh highlighted AGEL's current status as India's largest operating renewable portfolio holder, boasting an 8.4-gigawatt capacity, while emphasizing the company's efforts to bolster execution capabilities in preparation for its next phase of growth. While AGEL continues its endeavor to minimize water usage across all operational plants, it is also actively exploring methods to reduce water consumption in upcoming projects. Notably, in FY23, AGEL attained water-positive certification (for plants exceeding 200 megawatts) from DNV, an independent global assurance agency. Looking ahead, the company plans to make further investments in advanced technology to drive down water consumption. "As we move forward, we are opting to implement robotic cleaning to drastically reduce water usage to nearly zero across our plants… At AGEL, we recognize our pivotal role in mitigating climate change risks.
