After all, due to which all UPI services including Phonepe were closed

Unified Payment Interface (UPI), Instant Payment Gateway, which is run by the National Payments Council of India (NPCI), was closed for more than an hour. Since the UPI server was down, many users started reporting on social media that the UPI server was down and that they were unable to make any transactions using digital wallets or online payment services such as Google Pay, Phone Pay and Paytm. Many users wondered if there was really any trouble with UPI or whether it was only a problem on their part.

Some consumers have also shared screenshots of their fell UPI transactions on social media. One such user has said that he had been trying to make payments through Google Pay for a few hours but was unable to do so. However, at 5.18 pm, NPCI tweeted, 'Sorry for the inconvenience caused to UPI users due to technical difficulties. UPI service is now working and we are closely monitoring the system.'

According to recently released data, in December 2021, UPI recorded 456 million transactions, totalling Rs 8.26 lakh crore (about $111.2 billion). In addition, UPI transactions have registered transactions worth more than Rs 7.3 million (about $970 billion) from January 2021 to December 2021.  The calendar year increased by more than 110 percent year-on-year compared to 2020.

In December 2021, PhonePe led UPI transactions. 3.94 lakh crore transactions have also taken place this month. Google Pay has made it its second position with transactions totaling Rs 3.03 lakh crore. Paytm came third with a transaction of Rs 88,094 crore. Amazon Pay has secured the fourth position with a transaction of Rs 6,641 crore and WhatsApp Pay came fifth with a transaction of Rs 188 crore.
