Alabama Governor signs bill allowing State schools to teach yoga

U.S. Alabama Governor Kay lvey has signed a bill allowing state schools to perform yoga in classrooms, but will not be allowed to perform 'namaste' asanas while performing yoga. With this popular, centuries-old Indian exercise system, the three-decade-old ban has been lifted. Earlier, the State Education Board has issued a ban on Yoga in 1993 for its belonging to Hinduism.

It has been revealed that Alabama State Legislature has signed a bill allowing yoga to be performed in public schools days after it was finalised. According to the information received, yoga under the Bill will be restricted to 'stretching' and some asanas and 'Namaste' asanas are not going to be used during this period.

This has been done to allay the objections of many MPs and Christian groups who argued that Yoga had links to Hinduism. The law will come into force from August 1, before the start of the new academic session.
