Imphal: In Imphal, Manipur, the government has resumed its campaign to capture biometric data of all "illegal" Myanmar immigrants in the state. This campaign was initiated based on instructions from the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India. The goal is to complete the biometric capture of these immigrants by September 2023. To carry out this operation, a team of officials from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) has been assigned to train and assist the State Government officers in capturing the biometric data of these illegal immigrants. The process began in Imphal East District, where the NCRB officials worked with the State Government officials to collect the required data at the Foreigners' Detention Centre in Sajiwa. The government aims to continue this campaign across all districts in Manipur until the biometric data of all illegal Myanmar immigrants in the state are successfully captured, as per the target set for September 2023. The context of this campaign is amid violence that erupted in Manipur after a rally by the All Tribal Students' Union of Manipur (ATSUM) to protest against the high court's order. The order had asked the state government to consider including the Meitei community in the list of Scheduled Tribes (STs). As a result, opposition political parties have sent a delegation of 20 members to Manipur to meet with those affected by the violence. With the Opposition demanding a discussion in both Houses of Parliament and seeking a statement from Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the Manipur issue, the ongoing Monsoon Session has experienced frequent disruptions and limited progress in conducting regular parliamentary business.
