At the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2024 on June 10, Apple introduced its latest operating system, iOS 18, which significantly enhances the performance of the iPhone's Neural Engine by up to 25 percent. This upgrade is expected to power a host of new artificial intelligence (AI) features and improve the overall user experience. Enhanced Neural Processing Power A recent post by @lafaiel on X revealed that an iPhone 15 Pro Max running iOS 18 achieved a Geekbench ML Score of 7,816. This is a notable increase from the 6,249 score on iOS 17.5.1, reflecting a 25 percent improvement in machine learning performance. The Geekbench benchmarks focused on CoreML Neural Engine Inference, which manages the iPhone's machine learning tasks using both the CPU and the Neural Processing Unit (NPU). Unlike a GPU that accelerates graphics, the NPU optimizes neural network operations. iOS 18: A Platform for AI Innovations iOS 18, also known as "Apple Intelligence," will introduce several advanced AI features. These include: System-wide Text Generation and Summarization: AI capabilities integrated throughout the system. Image Playground App: A new app for creating images. Upgraded Siri with On-Screen Awareness: Enhanced Siri that can respond based on what’s on the screen. Compatibility and Availability These new AI features will be available exclusively on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max models, which are powered by the A17 Pro SoC. While the iOS 18 Developer Beta 1 is already available worldwide, the full suite of Apple Intelligence features will roll out later this year, initially supporting only English (US). Overall, iOS 18 is set to bring significant advancements in AI capabilities and user experience to the latest iPhone models, reinforcing Apple's leadership in mobile technology innovation.
