Arms Amendment Bill passed in Lok Sabha, life imprisonment on illegal weapon possession

New Delhi: The Arms Amendment Bill passed in the lower house of parliament on Monday. This bill will be introduced in the upper house today. The bill provides for life imprisonment to those possessing illegal weapons and 2 years of imprisonment for those firing cheerfully in marriage ceremonies or fine of 1 lakh rupees or both.

Apart from this, some new types of crimes have also been included in the bill. In the Lok Sabha, Home Minister Amit Shah said that now after calling, it takes an average of 30 minutes for police to reach the scene in rural areas and 10 minutes in urban areas, so people do not need to carry weapons. Giving information on the bill, Home Minister Amit Shah said that it is a misconception that no one is killed in firing due to licensed weapons.

He said that in 2016, 191 people died in Uttar Pradesh, 12 in Bihar and 14 in Jharkhand due to the firing by licensed weapons. A person shall have the right to license for 2 arms. The validity period of the license has been increased from 3 years to 5 years. E-license arrangements will be made for online license.
