NEW DELHI: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal will vacate his official residence within a week, as confirmed by AAP Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh on Wednesday. Singh shared this update during a press conference, stating that Kejriwal would also relinquish all the privileges associated with his role as chief minister.
On Tuesday, Kejriwal, along with a team of AAP legislators, visited the Lieutenant Governor’s Secretariat to submit his resignation and propose the formation of a new government under the leadership of Atishi.
"Following his resignation, Kejriwal declared he would forgo all the benefits of his position, including security, and choose to live as an ordinary citizen," Singh said. "Despite our efforts to convince him otherwise, considering past threats to his safety, he remained resolute. He remarked, 'I have survived six months in jail; if God protected me then, He will protect me now.'"
Atishi was nominated by Kejriwal during a legislature party meeting, and her candidacy was unanimously approved by the AAP MLAs.
Sources indicate that there will be no Deputy Chief Minister under Atishi's leadership. She will be sworn in during a special Assembly session scheduled for September 26-27.
This leadership transition comes as Delhi approaches its next assembly elections. Kejriwal had previously advocated for scheduling Delhi's elections concurrently with Maharashtra's this year.
