Aurangabad: AIMIM MP from Aurangabad, Imtiyaz Jalil on Thursday said that if an airport in Maharashtra is named after Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, it has no problem, but the name of the city should not be changed. A day before this comment of Jalil, Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray had requested the Center to issue a notification to name the Aurangabad airport after Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. In March 2020, the Maharashtra cabinet decided that the Aurangabad airport at Chikhalthana should be renamed after Sambhaji Maharaj. The Shiv Sena, which is in alliance with the NCP and Congress in the state, has been demanding the name of Aurangabad city be changed to Sambhajinagar for the past few decades. However, the Congress says it is against any such move. When asked about AIMIM's stand in this regard, Jalil said, "We have no objection to the name of Aurangabad airport after Chhatrapati Sambhaji but we will have objection to changing the name of the city.” Earlier on Tuesday, BJP MP in the Rajya Sabha, Dr. Bhagwat Karad, urged Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri to name the airport after Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj because he is the Symbol of self-respect from Maharashtra.
