PHNOM PENH: Cambodia is preparing to host the 16th ASEAN Defence Ministers' Meeting (ADMM) on June 22 in Phnom Penh, which will be chaired by Cambodian Defense Minister Gen. Tea Banh, according to an official statement released on Friday. The summit will bring together Defense Ministers from all ASEAN member states, according to the announcement, reported Xinhua news agency. A number of documents, including enhanced military cooperation among ASEAN member states to prevent cross-border pandemics, promoting support mechanisms for female peacekeepers, and establishing cooperation among military educational institutions, are expected to be adopted at the upcoming meeting, according to the statement. The meeting is also expected to endorse a Phnom Penh vision on the role of defence institutions in supporting the post-Covid pandemic recovery, as well as a joint declaration to strengthen solidarity for harmonious security, according to General Nem Sowath, director-general of Cambodia's General Department of the Defence Ministry's Policy and Foreign Affairs. "As the host of the ASEAN Defence Ministers' meeting and related security gatherings in 2022, Cambodia is committed to promote ASEAN solidarity to confront current and upcoming security problems in the area," he said during a press conference today. Apart from the 16th ADMM, a virtual ASEAN-China Defence Ministers' informal meeting and a physical ASEAN-Japan Defence Ministers' informal meeting will be held, Sowath said.
