AGRA: The Ghatiya Azam Khan Road in Agra has been renamed 'Shri Ashok Singhal Marg,' in honour of late Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) leader Ashok Singhal, who was instrumental in the Ram Janmabhoomi movement. During a municipal board meeting in September, a proposal to change the road's name was tabled. Agra's 'Mughal Road' was renamed 'Maharaja Agrasen Road' a few months ago. According to Agra Mayor Naveen Jain, the decision to rename the road was made to honour Singhal, a trained engineer who was born in 1926 in a house on the Ghatiya Azam Khan Road. He later joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) as a full-time pracharak, and in 1981, became general secretary of Vishva Hindu Parishad. "Ashok Singhal had played a pivotal role in shaping the movement by uniting Hindus across India in support of the construction of the Ram temple in Ayodhya," he said. Jain stated that the process of changing the names of places that are reminiscent of "slavery periods" will continue.
