Assam plans to finish the first dose of its 15-18 group by January 9

Guwahati: Assam aims to complete the first dose of Covid-19 vaccine for children aged 15 to 18 years old in the state within a week, from January 3 to 9, and to begin the booster dosage campaign for individuals aged 60 and up on January 10.

According to Health Minister Keshab Mahanta, these age groups of children, which include pupils taking board examinations starting in March next year, would be given Covaxin vaccination, which has a shorter gap between doses (28 days) than Covishield vaccine, which has an 84-day interval between doses.

"A student who receives the first dosage of Covaxin on January 9 will be eligible for the second dose in February, far ahead of the exam dates," Mahanta explained. "We'll travel to schools and colleges to vaccinate kids between the ages of 15 and 18." "We've told the deputy commissioners to choose schools and universities in their districts and prepare them to serve as immunisation centres," Mahanta added.

Those who are not enrolled in any educational institution between the ages of 18 and 24 can get the vaccine during regular vaccination clinics, he added.
