Today is the birthday of the famous legendary singer, composer and lyricist Bhupen Hazarika of the entertainment world. Bharat Ratna awardee Bhupen Hazarika ruled the hearts of crores of people with his amazing voice. Bhupen Hazarika was such a unique artist that he himself wrote his songs, and composed and sang them. Hazarika worked in many genres including song-poetry writing, singing, filmmaking and journalism. He worked to take Assamese literature and culture to the world stage. He was also awarded the Assam Ratna. Bhupen Hazarika was born on September 8, 1926, in Sadiya, Assam. His father's name was Neelkant Hazarika and his mother's name was Shantipriya Hazarika. Bhupen was the eldest of 7 brothers and 3 sisters. After completing his early education from Guwahati, he took admission in Banaras Hindu University for graduation. After graduating from Honours in 1944, he obtained a master's degree in 1946. Thereafter, he completed his PhD in Mass Communication from Columbia University. Bhupen Hazarika started writing and singing songs from an early age. He wrote his first song at the age of 10. It is said that Bhupen has been singing the Assamese folk song Borgeet at a function in Tezpur. Jyoti Prasad Agarwala, popularly known as Kalaguru, was very impressed with his song. Jyoti Prasad Agarwala recorded two songs from Bhupen Hazarika at the age of 12 in his 1939 Assamese film Indramalati.
