The candidates for the upcoming byelections in West Bengal and Arunachal Pradesh have been announced by the BJP. Last month, the Election Commission announced the dates for six assembly seat by-elections in five states. Votes will be counted on March 2 after voting on February 27. Tsering Lhamu will run for the Lumla (ST) seat in Arunachal Pradesh, while Dilip Saha will run for the Sagardighi seat in West Bengal, according to the party's official communiqué. On February 27, by-elections will be held in two assembly districts in Maharashtra, one assembly district each in Jharkhand and Tamil Nadu. Lakshadweep's parliamentary district will have byelections on February 27. Elections in West Bengal and Arunachal Pradesh were both required due to the passing of the incumbent MLAs. Jambey Tashi, a BJP leader from Lumla, passed suddenly in November of last year following a brief illness. As a result of the passing of Trinamool Congress leader Subrata Saha, Bengal's Sagardighi seat has remained vacant. Meanwhile, Leki Norbu, a former "gaon burah" (village headman), was announced as the People's Party of Arunachal's candidate for the impending by-election in Lumla on Tuesday.
