Bodies of 1084 civilians found in Kiev region, over 300 have not been identified

KIEV, Ukraine: Ukrainian police have discovered 1,084 bodies in the Kiev region, with majority of them shot dead, a top police official said.

"Investigators examined the remains before transporting them to forensic medical facilities. Civilians who had no ties to territorial defence (forces) or other military units are among the victims "In a live broadcast on Friday night, Andrii Nabytov, the regional police chief, was quoted by Ukrayinska Pravda as saying.  "The vast majority of the casualties, between 50 and 75 percent, were killed by weaponry such as machine guns, sniper rifles, and submachine guns, depending on the settlement. At this time, more than 300 victims' bodies have still to be recognised " the report read.

Instead of waiting for information, Nabytov urged Ukrainians to share details on friends and relatives who have gone missing or have not communicated with them since the conflict began on February 24.  They should use the special phone line 102 in the first instance when providing information, he added.

The UN Human Rights Office has registered 2,435 civilian deaths and 2,946 injuries since Russia launched its invasion of Kiev on April 21. There were 631 men, 383 women, 42 girls, 61 boys, and 70 youngsters among the dead.

The real numbers, however, could be higher, according to the Office, because the information from some regions where heavy hostilities have been ongoing has been delayed, and many reports are still awaiting confirmation. The death toll in Ukraine has surpassed 10,000, according to the government.
