Call for a bankers' strike on the 16th, 17th Dec remains in place: AIBEA

Chennai: The banking unions' two-day strike would continue because no promise was offered on deferring the presentation of the Banking Laws (Amendment) Bill 2021 in Parliament, according to C.H. Venkatachalam, General Secretary, All India Bank Employees' Association (AIBEA).

He said the bank unions, Indian Banks Association (IBA), and the government met in Delhi on Tuesday for an adjourned conciliation meeting convened by the Additional Chief Labour Commissioner. Representatives from the government and the IBA were unable to provide any assurances on deferring the Bill's introduction in Parliament.

"As a result, the strike scheduled for December 16-17 remains in place. The conciliatory session has been rescheduled for Wednesday "Venkatachalam expressed his thoughts. Government-owned banks should not be privatised, according to bank unions. The government has previously stated that two of its banks will be privatised. The United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU), an umbrella organisation of bank unions, has called for a strike to protest bank privatisation.
