Can gay marriage reduce the stress of young people?

The issue of same-sex marriage has once again become a topic of discussion in India. The Central Government has expressed its opposition to this case in the Supreme Court. The Centre has to say that this is only an elite urban way of thinking, and the Supreme Court does not have the right to decide on it.

The constitutional bench of the Supreme Court has also started hearing in this case. Meanwhile, a survey has also been done. In the survey, the team of psychologists, researchers, and educators also tried to find out what the effects of legalising same-sex marriage would be. A recent survey found that recognising same-sex marriage would reduce anxiety, depression, and suicidal thoughts among LGBTQ youth. It is seen from all that many people support it, and if it is made legal, then they are also going to support it. People have to say that this is going to bring positive and better social, legal, and mental health benefits to members and families of LGBTQIA communities.

This survey was done with the help of an online questionnaire. In this, 5,825 persons above the age of 18 to 60 from 27 states across the country have been involved. Out of which, 37 percent identify themselves as LGBTQ+. 95 percent of those surveyed said they would welcome the legalisation of marriage for LGBTQ+ individuals because it would improve well-being, legal protection, and access to legal rights.

Impact on mental health: About 87 percent of respondents agreed that legalising same-sex marriage is going to have an equally positive impact on the individual and collective mental health of such people and their families in India. One person has said that the fear of rejection, discrimination, and violence increases stress and anxiety even more. Legalising same-sex marriage could ease some of this tension by providing a more stable and secure legal framework for relationships.
