Canada New Immigration Rules to Boost Temporary Resident Doc Cancellations, And More Safety

OTTAWA: Canada Gives Immigration Officers More Power to Cancel Study and Work Permits

Canada has made changes to its immigration rules, giving officers more power. They have the power to cancel temporary resident permits, including study and work permits. These new rules, introduced by Immigration, Refugees & Citizenship Canada (IRCC), started on  31st January, 2025, and are now part of the official Canada Gazette II.

According to Immigration, Refugees & Citizenship Canada, these changes will help save Canada's borders and make the immigration system stronger. New Rules for Canceling Permits are as follows:-

Under the updated rules, immigration officers can cancel electronic travel authorizations (eTAs). They can also cancerl temporary resident visas (TRVs) if a person:

Becomes ineligible Gives false information Has a criminal record Experiences changes in their situation

Study and work permits can also be revoked in cases where:

The person becomes a permanent resident The person has passed away The permit was issued by mistake Stricter Immigration Control

Before these changes, officers could only refuse new applications but had little power to cancel existing permits. The new rules fix this issue, allowing officials to take quick action when someone no longer meets the requirements.

The Canadian government has been closely watching its temporary residence scheme, more particulary study permits, due to a rise in applications. Authorities are working to stop misuse, including fake letter of acceptance (LoA) and people staying longer than allowed.

Protecting Border Security

The updated rules also help with security. Officers can cancel permits if they think someone might overstay their visit or if a document has been lost, stolen, or forsaken. This ensures that only genuine visitors and workers enter Canada.

IRCC further offers that it will keep improving its immigration system by investing in new technologies and better enforcement methods. These steops aim to protect Canada's borders and maintain the realiability of temporary residence programs.

Canada government's new powers to suspend, cancel or amend immigration doc as and when necessary are intended to help stop people who may pose a security risk from coming  the country. The Canadian govt already has planned to introduce steps that will impose curbs on countries that don't cooperate in returning their citizens in cases of fake entry.
