5298 witnesses, 290 documents CBI takes big step in NEET paper leak case

The CBI recently unearthed a major scam in which 144 candidates have been identified who had paid for leaked and solved papers just hours before appearing for the NEET-UG exam. According to officials, this information was given on October 7.

In this case, the CBI filed its third chargesheet last week, naming Pankaj Kumar. Pankaj, along with principal Ahsanul Haque and vice principal Mohammad Imtiyaz Alam of Oasis School in Hazaribagh, Jharkhand, had hatched a plan to steal the examination paper from the school. The crime was committed on May 5, after the paper arrived in the school in a trunk from the bank after 8 am.

Ahsanul Haque was the city coordinator of Hazaribagh, and Alam was appointed the centre superintendent for the NEET-UG 2024 exam. The chargesheet contains 5,500 pages, citing evidence based on 298 witnesses, 290 documents and 45 material objects. The CBI has alleged that Pankaj Kumar used a sophisticated tool kit to open and close the trunk of papers, which the CBI seized from his house.

Pankaj sent the pictures of the papers to his friend Surendra Kumar Sharma, who was in a guest house in Hazaribagh. There, nine students solved these papers. The solved papers were scanned and sent to different places and then handed over to the students who paid a hefty amount for these papers before the exam.

Only those students who had paid in advance were allowed entry into these places, the CBI said. After the examination began, these students were allowed to go to their examination centres, but they were not allowed to take the copies with them. Later, after the students left, the gang members burnt the solved papers.

The CBI has arrested 49 accused in the case, 40 of whom have been named in the charge sheets filed so far. 21 mobile phones used by the main accused in the case have also been recovered. The CBI said it is preparing to initiate legal action against the beneficiaries of this paper leak.
