This Friday, November 15, 2024, Guru Nanak Jayanti will be celebrated, leading to closures of banks, schools, and major stock markets in India. The day, which also coincides with Karthika Purnima, is widely observed to honor Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism. There are additional regional festivities in states like Odisha and Telangana. Banks Closed in Multiple States As per the Reserve Bank of India's holiday list, banks will be closed in several states on November 15. This includes Maharashtra, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, Jharkhand, Mizoram, and more. Banks in Karnataka will also close on November 18 for Kanakadasa Jayanti, while banks in Meghalaya will observe a holiday on November 23 for Seng Kutsnem. Despite physical branches being closed, digital banking services will remain available. Stock Market Holiday The National Stock Exchange (NSE) and the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) will be closed on November 15, giving investors and traders a long weekend, as trading will resume on Monday, November 18. There will be no trading in stocks, derivatives, or the Securities Lending and Borrowing (SLB) segments on this day. The next scheduled stock market closure is December 25, 2024, for Christmas. Schools Closed Across India Schools across India will remain closed on November 15 in observance of Guru Nanak Jayanti. In addition, schools in Punjab will have an extra day off on November 16 to commemorate the martyrdom of Kartar Singh Sarabha. Odisha will also celebrate Rahas Purnima on November 15, which is a notable cultural event in the region. MCX Open for Evening Trading While the National Commodity & Derivatives Exchange (NCDEX) will be closed, the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) will still operate during the evening session from 5 PM to 11:30 PM.
