Celebrating Rani Lakshmibai's birth anniversary, November 19

The anniversary of Rani Lakshmibai's birth is observed as Martyr's Day in Jhansi in memory of the victims of the Rebellion of 1857.

Rani of Jhansi was a title bestowed to Rani Lakshmibai, the reigning monarch of Jhansi. She was given the name Manikarnika and was born into a Maratha Brahman household. Manu from Manikarnika became her nickname. One of the key players in the May 10, 1857-starting Rebellion of 1857 was Rani Lakshmibai. She became the embodiment of the Indian nation's freedom struggle against the British Raj.

Lakshmibai's exact birth date is still up for question. On November 19, 1828, it is thought that Rani Lakshmibai was born as Manikarnika Tambe.

Lakshmibai became Rani Lakshmibai after her marriage to Gangadhar Rao Newalkar, the Maharaja of Jhansi, in 1842.  A few years after marriage, in 1851, Manikarnika gave birth to a boy but he could not survive and died after 4 months.

Taking advantage of the Maharaja's passing, the East India Company utilised the Doctrine of Lapse and refused to recognise Damodar Rao as the legitimate heir. Rani Lakshmibai even appealed the unfairness to a court in London, which dismissed her petition.

Rani Lakshmibai began assembling an army of rebels because she was resolved to fight for the Dominion of Jhansi. Great warriors stood by her side, and Rani had a female army to bolster her defence.

It is said that, after a fierce war,  Rani Lakshmibai heroically battled with two swords in both of her hands when the British troops invaded Jhansi after a bloody battle. She reportedly attached her son Damodar Rao to her back. She gave her life as a martyr on June 17, 1958, for the liberation of India.
