Central banker warns Sri Lanka faces shutdown sans stable Govt

COLOMBO: The governor of Sri Lanka's central bank, Nandalal Weerasinghe issued a warning that the country may shut down if a stable government is not established soon,  local media reported.

There is "a great deal of uncertainty" regarding the availability of sufficient foreign currency to cover the cost of critical petroleum. Therefore, a stable government was necessary for progress in obtaining a global rescue package, he said.

The country is in the grip of mass unrest over an economic ongoing crisis.

Many blame the Rajapaksa government for mishandling the crisis and see Wickremesinghe, who became Prime Minister in May, as part of the problem, as per BBC report.

The economy of Sri Lanka has collapsed, and the cost of food, petrol, and other essentials has skyrocketed for common people.

Nandalal Weerasinghe, who himself recently assumed the role of central bank governor in April, stated that he did not "see a way forward" on how to deliver necessities in the absence of a stable government.
