Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia announced on Saturday that the Centre has set a target to connect all villages in the country with telecom services within the next 12 months. The Cabinet has approved a special fund for this purpose, and Scindia himself will monitor the progress of the work every week. Scindia stated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is committed to achieving 100% target completion. The government has identified around 24,000 villages that still lack telecom connectivity. A special plan has already been initiated to reach these villages, and funds have been allocated for this purpose. Scindia mentioned that most of these villages are located in the northeastern states, and a strategy is being developed to reach them. Under the provisions of the new telecom act, necessary infrastructure is being established, and a mix of technologies like VSAT and satellite is being used to achieve 100% target completion within 12 months. Scindia claimed that he is monitoring the progress of the work on a weekly basis, and around 13-14 thousand villages have already been brought under this scheme. He also spoke about the allocation of funds for the northeastern states in the 2024-25 Union Budget. Scindia stated that the northeastern region has been neglected for the past 75 years, but Prime Minister Modi is committed to making it an engine of growth. He announced that a special fund of around Rs 11,000 crore has been allocated for flood management in Assam and Sikkim, and 100 new branches of the India Post Payments Bank will be opened in the region as per the budget provisions.
