Centre Notifies Grievance Panels to Look Into Social Media complaints

New Delhi: the  Ministry of Electronics and IT said in a statement that the Central government on Saturday notified 3 grievance appellate committees  to look into users‘ complaints against social media companies,  The Grievance appellate committees , formulated with three members each, have been set up based on the recently amended Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021 (IT Rules 2021) .

“Keeping in view of the transition period needed for the intermediaries according to their requests and technical requirement, the online platform will be functional in 30 days of this notification of the Grievance Appellate Committee, i.e. from 1st March 2023," the ministry said.

Accordingly, users will have the option to appeal against the decision of the grievance officer of the social media intermediaries and other online platforms before this new appellate body. The Committee will endeavour to address the user’s appeal within a period of one month.

The first panel will be chaired by the CEO of the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre under the Ministry of Home Affairs.

After the notification of the IT regulations for social media, Minister of State for Electronics and IT, Rajeev Chandrasekhar said the compliance with rules and laws was not a "pick-and-choose" or "cherry-picking" option for the platforms.
