The government is committed to keeping essential food prices stable, especially during elections, said Union Minister Piyush Goyal. He assured that the government, under Prime Minister Modi's leadership, would take necessary steps to prevent any sudden price hikes in items like onions, tomatoes, and pulses. Goyal, heading the Ministry of Food and Consumer Affairs, emphasized the government's dedication to easing the financial burden on households, particularly women. Responding to concerns about price spikes during elections, Goyal stated, "We are vigilant and will ensure stability. This government prioritizes the welfare of Indian women." He highlighted the government's substantial investment of Rs 28,000 crore in the Price Stabilization Fund over recent years to combat food inflation. "Our focus remains on supporting households and maintaining a balanced budget," Goyal affirmed. With Lok Sabha elections expected in April-May and the Election Commission soon to announce the schedule, Goyal outlined the government's efforts to control food prices in recent years. "Even during global inflation crises, India maintained stability," he said, contrasting it with the inflation during the UPA regime. Goyal cited examples of swift government action during price hikes, such as intervening to procure tomatoes from other regions when prices surged due to adverse weather conditions. "We ensure prices remain reasonable and take proactive measures against inflation," he added. To alleviate pressure on consumers, Goyal mentioned the introduction of affordable essentials like Bharat Chana dal, wheat flour, and rice in the market, which have positively impacted prices. "Inflation is under control, and we adhere to RBI mandates," he stated. Regarding the forecasted lower onion output for 2023-24, Goyal assured proactive government measures. The government operates 18,000 outlets and collaborates with e-commerce platforms to make subsidized items like pulses, flour, and rice accessible to consumers.
