Centre to Introduce Comprehensive list of Vital Minerals, draft Policy

New Delhi: In a momentous step towards reducing reliance on imports and enhancing the resilience of the supply chain, the Centre is set to unveil the "Comprehensive Catalog of Vital Minerals for India." This unveiling represents a significant milestone in India's quest for self-sufficiency and security concerning mineral resources, as stated by the Ministry of Mines.

According to the ministry, this meticulously compiled catalog aims to identify and prioritize minerals that are indispensable for various industrial sectors, including high-tech electronics, telecommunications, transportation, and defense.

The catalog will serve as a comprehensive framework to shape policies, facilitate strategic planning, and guide investment decisions within the mining sector. This initiative aligns with the broader vision of achieving India's "net zero" target, reflecting the government's commitment to fostering a robust and resilient mineral sector, the ministry added.

India has recently joined the esteemed Mineral Security Partnership to fortify critical mineral supply chains.

The Critical Minerals List for India comprises a strategic compilation of minerals and elements that are deemed essential for the country's economic growth, national security, and technological advancements. Recognizing the significance of these minerals in various industries, the list highlights the crucial role they play in sectors such as defense, energy, electronics, telecommunications, and manufacturing.

India, with its rapidly expanding economy and ambitious development plans, aims to secure a stable and sustainable supply of these critical minerals. The list encompasses a diverse range of minerals including but not limited to lithium, cobalt, rare earth elements, graphite, tungsten, and platinum group metals. These minerals are vital for the production of batteries, renewable energy technologies, electric vehicles, aerospace components, advanced electronics, and other high-tech applications.
