New Delhi: In anticipation of the upcoming Chhath Puja 2023, the Delhi government is gearing up to create more than 1,000 dedicated Chhath Ghats throughout the national capital. Revenue Minister Atishi made this announcement during a high-level review meeting, which convened district magistrates to ensure the seamless execution of this auspicious festival. At the meeting, Atishi emphasized the importance of advanced preparations to prevent any inconveniences for the devotees and to avoid last-minute mismanagement. "The Chhath Puja festival is deeply ingrained in the beliefs of countless individuals, and the Kejriwal administration is resolute in its commitment to ensure an impeccable worship experience for the devotees. This is the directive we've issued to all relevant authorities," remarked the minister. Furthermore, she urged district magistrates to pinpoint suitable locations for Chhath Ghats within their respective jurisdictions, with a focus on devotees' convenience, and to initiate ghat construction promptly. In addition, Atishi instructed officials to initiate discussions with local Chhath Puja committees, seeking their input and coordinating preparations to ensure a successful event. "These 1,000 Chhath Ghats will be equipped with essential amenities such as clean water, tents, electricity, restrooms, security personnel, medical services, power backup, and CCTV surveillance for the convenience of the devotees," she added. The Maithili-Bhojpuri Academy will host cultural programs at various Ghats during the Chhath Puja festivities. The Revenue Minister also underscored the significance of maintaining cleanliness at the Chhath Ghats. In a parallel development, a delegation comprising five members of the Delhi Congress met with Lieutenant Governor V. K. Saxena earlier this week. They submitted a memorandum requesting the declaration of 'Chhath Puja' as a 'dry day,' as reported in local news outlets. The party has accused the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government of insensitivity to the religious sentiments of Purvanchalis, a significant community of Bhojpuri-speaking individuals from eastern Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Jharkhand who reside in the national capital. Statistics suggest that Purvanchalis constitute about one-third of the total 1.46 crore votes in the national capital. The debate over recognizing Chhath Puja as a 'dry day' has sparked discussions regarding religious inclusivity and cultural sensitivity.
