Chidambaram to be presented before the ED on Tuesday

The erstwhile finance minister of the country, P. Chidambaram is expected to be present before the ED [Enforcement Directorate] regarding the “Aircel-Maxis money laundering case” on Tuesday.

The veteran member of Congress was supposed to report to the ED on Monday of his meeting with the investigation officers for interrogation.

Earlier Chidambaram had applied for an anticipatory bail which was hence granted to him on May 30, guarding him against any arrest till June 5.

The Aircel-Maxis deal arose out of the 2G spectrum probe. Which intends to grant clearance of Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) to the firm M/S Global Communication Holding Services Ltd for investing into Aircel.

In the year 2006 Chidambaram granted the FIPB approval, which the ED addressed as, "beyond his decree".

Chidambaram is authorised to grant approvals only on ventures up to Rs. 600 crores.

The Aircel-Maxis case came under light when C. Sivasankaran, the owner of Aircel, filed a complaint with the Central Bureau of Investigation admitting to being forced by Maxis to sell his stakes.

Later it was discovered that during the period of 2007-2009 Maxis had invested Rs.742 crore in Sun Direct.
