Children Covid hospitalizations are highest in the US: Reports

The latest statistics from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, paediatric hospitalizations due to COVID-19 are at an all-time high since the outbreak began (CDC). Since the CDC began tracking the statistic in August 2020, the country has averaged 893 new hospital admissions per day for the children.

According to the CDC, the majority of these hospitalizations are due to COVID-19, while some children were hospitalised for other reasons but tested positive for COVID-19 when they were admitted or during their hospital stay. From August 1, 2020, to January 13, 2022, the country experienced over 90,000 total hospital admissions for children aged 17 and under, according to CDC data.

Those ages newborn to four years, who are not yet eligible for immunisation, have the highest hospitalisation rates of all children. According to the CDC, the Omicron variation does not appear to cause more severe illness in children than other viral variants, and paediatric hospitalisation rates are still lower than any other adult age group.

The CDC predicted that COVID-19 hospitalizations among children will continue to rise in the following weeks. To help guard against COVID-19, the CDC advised everyone aged 5 and above to acquire a COVID-19 vaccination.
