China covid Watch: India need not panic, excellent vaccination coverage

Adar Poonawalla, CEO of the Serum Institute of India (SII), concern on Tuesday over reports of a rising COVID-19 graph in China, but added that there is no need for fear because India has excellent vaccination coverage.

Poonawalla's tweet was sent out the day after the Union Health Ministry advised all states and Union Territories to speed up whole genome sequencing of positive samples in order to monitor any newly discovered variations. This was in response to an uptick in cases in the US and China.

"Despite the rising COVID cases reported in China, we don't need to panic given our good vaccination rates and history. We must continue to rely on and abide by the rules established by the Indian government and @MoHFW INDIA "Tweeted Poonawalla.

The Pune-based Serum Institute of India worked with Oxford University and the pharmaceutical company Astra Zeneca to create the Covishield vaccination during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Pooanwalla stated in October that the Serum Institute of India discontinued manufacturing the vaccine in December 2021. About 100 million doses of the whole quantity that was accessible at the time had already expired, he had said.
