Chris Silverwood Resigns as Sri Lanka’s Coach Following T20 World Cup Exit

In a significant announcement, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) revealed that Chris Silverwood has stepped down from his role as head coach, following Sri Lanka's disappointing performance in the ongoing T20 World Cup.

The decision comes shortly after former captain Mahela Jayawardene resigned as the team's consultant coach, marking a period of transition for Sri Lanka's coaching staff.

"Being an international coach involves extended periods away from family. After extensive discussions with my loved ones, I have made the difficult decision to return home and prioritize spending quality time together," Silverwood stated, reflecting on his departure.

Expressing gratitude for his time with Sri Lanka Cricket, Silverwood added, "It has been a true honor to be part of Sri Lanka Cricket, and I will cherish many fond memories from my tenure."

Sri Lanka's campaign in the T20 World Cup ended disappointingly with two losses, one no result, and a solitary win in the group stages, marking their poorest performance in an ICC event.

During Silverwood's tenure, Sri Lanka achieved significant milestones such as winning the T20 Asia Cup in 2022 and reaching the final of the previous year's 50-over Asia Cup, albeit finishing as runners-up to India. His coaching tenure also included notable bilateral series victories, including a memorable triumph over Australia in the 50-over format and two Test series victories against Bangladesh.

SLC has already commenced the search for a new head coach ahead of the upcoming white-ball series against India next month. Following this, Sri Lanka is scheduled to tour England for a two-match Test series.
