New Delhi: Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury took aim at Sharmishtha Mukherjee, daughter of the late President Pranab Mukherjee, regarding her revelation that her father aspired to become Prime Minister in 2004. Chowdhury hinted at Sharmishtha's potential political shift, recalling her past engagement with the Congress. Sharmishtha, who joined the Congress in 2014 and contested the Delhi Assembly elections in 2015, claimed to have quit "active politics" in 2019. Chowdhury expressed surprise, stating, "till that time we never got to know something like this," referring to Pranab's desire for the PM post. Sharmishtha's upcoming book, "In Pranab, My Father: A Daughter Remembers," set to be published on December 11, the late Congress veteran's birth anniversary, unveils Pranab Mukherjee's aspiration for the prime ministership. In the chapter titled "The PM India Never Had," she detailed the speculation surrounding Dr. Manmohan Singh and Pranab as top contenders following Sonia Gandhi's withdrawal from the race. Sharmishtha conveyed her excitement to Pranab over a phone call, asking if he would become PM. Pranab's response was direct: "No, she will not make me the PM. It'll be Manmohan Singh." He emphasized the need for a quick announcement to end the uncertainty, stating, "This uncertainty is not good for the country."
